To determine the sulphonation reaction of benzene.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Fuming sulphuric acid : 1ml
- Benzene : 2 drops
APPARATUS:
- Test tube
- Dropper
PROCEDURE:
- To one ml of fuming sulphuric acid taken in a test tube, 2 drops of benzene are added & shaken well for 3 minutes.
OBSERVATION:
- Oily layer disappeared.
CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:
- Benzene sulphonic acid is formed.
