Reaction of phenol with sodium hydroxide solution

AIM:
To determine the reaction of phenol with sodium hydroxide solution.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Phenol
  • Sodium hydroxide solution

APPARATUS:

  • Dropper
  • Test tube

PROCEDURE:

  • To 2 drops of phenol taken in a test tube, a few drops of sodium hydroxide solution are added & shaken well.

OBSERVATION:

  • Phenol dissolved.

CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:

  • This is due to the formation of sodium phenoxide.

Ignition Test For Naphthalene

AIM:
To determine the ignition test for naphthalene.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Naphthalene

APPARATUS:

  • Nickel spatula
  • Bunsen burner

PROCEDURE:

  • A little of the substance is ignited on a nickel spatula.

OBSERVATION:

  • Burnt with a highly sooty flame.

CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:

  • Naphthalene is aromatic.

Ignition Test For Toluene

AIM:

To determine the ignition test for toluene.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Toluene

APPARATUS:

  • Nickel Spatula
  • Bunsen burner

PROCEDURE:

  • A little of the substance is burnt on a nickel spatula.

OBSERVATION:

  • Burnt with a highly luminous flame.

CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:

  • Toluene is aromatic.
