Reaction Of Benzene With Water

AIM:
To determine the reaction of benzene with water.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Benzene : 1 drop
  • Water

APPARATUS:

  • Test tube

PROCEDURE:

  • One drop of benzene is added to a little water taken in a test tube.

OBSERVATION:

  • Benzene remained at the top.

CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:

  • Benzene is immiscible & lighter than water.

Ignition Test For Benzene

AIM:
To determine the ignition test for benzene.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Benzene

APPARATUS:

  • Nickel spatula
  • Bunsen burner

PROCEDURE:

  • A little of the benzene substance is burnt on a nickel spatula.

OBSERVATION:

  • Burnt with a highly sooty flame.

CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:

  • Benzene is aromatic.

Sulphonation Of Benzene

AIM:
To determine the sulphonation reaction of benzene.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • Fuming sulphuric acid : 1ml
  • Benzene : 2 drops

APPARATUS:

  • Test tube
  • Dropper

PROCEDURE:

  • To one ml of fuming sulphuric acid taken in a test tube, 2 drops of benzene are added & shaken well for 3 minutes.

OBSERVATION:

  • Oily layer disappeared.

CHEMISTRY OF THE REACTION:

  • Benzene sulphonic acid is formed.
